Raising A Green Baby
Don’t worry, we’re not talking about Martians here. We’re talking about being conscientious about going green with your whole family. Including the baby. Organic baby items are available in everything from their food to hygiene products, toys, bedding, and clothing.
Baby furniture that has non-toxic finishes are a great idea because we have all treasured the teeth marks in the furniture when the baby starts teething. I wonder how much stain, varnish, polyurethane, and paint some of our babies have consumed. And think about the blankets, pillows, and stuffed toys they chew on. Wouldn’t it give you peace of mind to see them chewing on those things made of natural, organic fibers?
Think about the bath products. I shudder to think of all the times I’ve seen my kids and grand-kids drinking the bathwater! Soaps and shampoos made of all natural, organic ingredients are soothing and healthy for baby skin and a much better option if and when the bath water goes internal.
Then there is a huge selection of toys for all ages, all made of non-toxic materials with non-toxic finishes.
And what a comfort to dress your baby in the soft, natural fibers of organic cotton and bamboo. Again, babies chew, and they sweat a lot. That tender skin and those little mouths need to be touched and swaddled by fabrics you feel are safe and healthy.
And let’s not forget the food. You can find, or make organic baby food that is completely free of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and artificial additives like colors, flavor enhancers, preservatives, and sweeteners.
So, as you shop for all the baby stuff you need, consider going green. Not only are these organic items better for your baby, they are better for the environment, as well. Treat your whole family to happy, healthy, organic living.

Are puppies The Same As Children?

photo credit: Rafael Acorsi Even though many people in the dog community including dog owners, dog lovers and dog sitters, often describe their four legged friends as “children” and “people”, I still say they are a far cry from another human being. Babies require a commitment and responsibility that far outweigh any requirements of a dog in terms of time, money, and maturity.
Also, I think some of the “lessons” learned from owning a dog cannot transfer over to having a child. For example, a dog can be trained to do or not do a certain behavior with doggie treats, a clicker, positive reinforcement and some weekend time.
On the other hand, a child develops over a time span of years with infinitely greater complexity due to a the additional capacity of the human brain and its thought processing skills, and the additional vulnerabilities of a human child versus an animal child.
The point that really brings this debate into view is the argument that some dog owners make about getting a dog before a child. One clear downside to this is that on a core level, some people might not actually want a dog. Instead, they just feel obligated to get a dog before getting a child as a “training program” to their human child. This kind of attitude may point to why so many dogs are returned or abandoned by younger couples.
Of course, this issue is not a simple one and there is value on both sides of the debate. Dogs, of course, teach humans to care for another living thing that depends on them to fulfill their basic needs. I would love hear from all of you dog owners, and particularly those with deeper expertise like Seattle dog boarding facilities to hear your thoughts and ideas in the comments below to get a dialogue going! Should young couples get dogs in an effort to become better future parents?
The Benefits Of Buying Bouncers For Babies

photo credit: Brad Trump Photography When you have a baby, you know you are going to need a lot of baby gear and products. Some of these products are more necessary than others. You know that you won’t be able to get away without having diapers, a crib, and bottles, but then there are other products that are a little bit more in the gray area.
One of those products is a baby bouncer. Are bouncers for babies really necessary to buy? That depends. Here are a few benefits and reasons why you might want to look into buying a bouncer for your baby.
1. Frees up parents. Soon after you have a baby, you will realize that you really don’t have much of your own time, even to set your baby down. A bouncer allows parents to put their baby some place safe and entertaining while they do chores around the house, are on the laptop, or are talking on the phone. Just being able to have your hands free is a great luxury once you have a baby.
2. Strengthens baby’s legs. The jury is still out on whether there is documented evidence that putting your baby in a bouncer will strengthen his or her legs, but most parents agree that it cannot hurt. It gets a baby used to being in an upright position before they begin to walk on their own. Bouncers with wheels also help your baby navigate around a small area and learn the power of their own body.
3. Entertainment and Learning. Most bouncers also have toys and activities attached to the tray area which allows your baby a chance to explore different toys from a different vantage point. Bouncers also give your baby a chance to learn cognitive and motor skills all at once.
Bouncers offer several benefits that most parents find invaluable. While a bouncer is not an absolute necessity, it does make life with a baby easier and more enjoyable making the small cost worth it in the end.
